Dogs and Chickens Amid
the Clouds
Ts'ui Tzu-chung (fl. 17th
century)
Ming Dynasty
(A.D. 1368-1644)
Ink and color on silk.
Hanging scroll.
191.4 x 84.0cm
Ts'ui Tzu-chung was
a native of Peiping,
Hopeh. His style names
were K'ai-yu and Tao-mu;
his sobriquets were Pei-hai
and Ch'ing-yin. Excelling
in figure painting, Ts'ui
Tzu-chung and Ch'en Hung-
shou (A.D. 1599-1652) were
equally famous during the
17th century.
The painting depicts the
story of Hsu Hsun, a
magistrate of the Chin
dynasty ( A.D. 265-420 ).
In the year A.D. 282, it is
said, Hsu and his entire
household of 42 members,
complete with dogs and
chickens, mounted the
clouds and were transformed
into Taoist immortals.
Ts'ui's style possesses a
unique, almost eccentric
quality.
